Paranormal Romance

Imagine Your Town, USA, where superheroes save innocents and stop ubervillains from world domination -- all sporting catchy names and flashy spandex costumes.  That is what you get in this delightful book, Karma Girl, by Jennifer Estep.

When Carmen Cole, hard-working, investigative reporter, is betrayed by her fiancé (who turns out to be a superhero) and his nemesis, she vows to uncover the true identities of all superheroes and ubervillains in the Nation.  A little vengeance does a scorned heart good!  Receiving a job at The Expose, a leading newspaper in Bigtime, NY, she moves from her southern hometown to reveal the mysteries behind the Fearless Five and Terrible Triad.

After discovering and publicizing the identity of one of the Five, tragic events turn her triumph into guilt and a once successful reputation into a debacle.  “Demoted” to the society pages, she now socializes with millionaires and fashionistas, much to her dismay.  When a run-in with the Terrible Triad leaves her future bleak, she is offered help from the leader of the Five -- Striker, a magnificent form of lean male muscle, with silver eyes that melt her heart and curl her toes.  But how can she accept when she has caused him and his superhero buddies so much pain already?  With a plan to save her hide and lead the Five to the Triad, Carmen manages to create chaos, but a scared submissive woman she is not.

Determined to identify the Triad, assist the Five and clean up her karma, she ends up falling in love, but can a regular girl have a future with a spandex-wearing, sword carrying, super-strength, regenerating hero?  Not to mention the late night rescues, the dangers of telekinetic villains hell bent on your demise and chafing leather.

A bit hesitant for the first two chapters, which were mostly narrative with little action, I soon warmed up to Carmen’s plight, and by chapter seven, I was hooked.  A real, down-to-earth heroine, Carmen is not interested in her looks or fashion.  She prefers learning the truth and helping to save the world.  My kinda girl!  Written in first-person, I not only empathized with her but with Striker and other members of the Fearless Five as well.  Jennifer Estep developed well-rounded characters that made the spin on reality believable and brought their world to life.

Karma Girl is a terrific, sexy, funny book.  I can’t wait for the sequel, Hot Mama.
