Psychic Clair Ivars couldn't foresee the unusual turn her life was about to take when Rachel Morgan, a bride-to-be with a bad case of pre-wedding jitters, comes to her for a reading. Twice divorced, Clair gives Rachel a piece of impulsive advice that causes her to call of the wedding. Before Clair can take back the things she's said, Rachel rushes out, leaving behind her rather large engagement ring and the address of the intended groom, Jack Heron.

Feeling responsible to fix the mess she caused, Clair rents a car and drives to the Heron Estate to return the ring. On the way there, a large blue heron flies into her windshield, and her car flips over in the woods. Making her way to the road, she hitches a ride with a truckload of gardeners, who are coincidentally in route to the estate. One gardener in particular catches her eye and on a dare, she kisses him.

Once at the estate, this comedy of errors gets interesting when Clair, who's been mistaken for a bridesmaid, is introduced to Jack and his intriguing family. To complicate the situation even more, Clair soon learns that the “gardener” she's been having sexual fantasies about is none other than the groom's best man, Mike. Then, as if that wasn't enough, Jack's eccentric grandmother mistakes Clair for Rachel—the bride.

Clair soon learns that there's more going on at the Heron Estate than meets the eye. But to uncover the truth, she must first get around Jack's conniving mother and sister and past the mysterious butler, Anderson, who seems to be the only character with a clue.

Accidentally Engaged is a charming and fun read. Author Mary Carter weaves a tale that will leave the reader guessing and wondering what Clair is going to get into next. Her cast of zany characters is well-drawn and perfectly mated to the complex story that takes one turn after another.
