In Subtle Magic, Beth Kery has created a complicated and charismatic race of paranormal males known as the Watchers. Watchers gather strength and power from sexual contact with human females. Rarely they find a true mate, a human female they cherish who provides them with incredible energies. Once found, a Watcher will rejoin his mate in every incarnation once she reaches the second change, the age where their union finds its strongest potential.
Skylar Halifax is the true mate of Duse Ammadon, a prince of the Watchers. She is also beloved by Duse’s brother Jax. When Jax’s jealousy pushes him to betray his family by forming an unthinkable alliance, the results are a series of brutal crimes against human and Watcher alike.
The story is very well written, but it contains a vast amount of information and extremely intricate plotting. This is especially true of its paranormal and magical aspects. The Watchers are a fascinating and incredibly sensual race, but their culture and history are very elaborate. It can be difficult for the reader to grasp all the nuances while they are trying to stay involved with the plot.
The strongly developed characters do help the reader focus. Skylar and Duse have an amazing sexual bond, and their love scenes are hot enough to burn the pages. It would be more enjoyable to have a fuller explanation of their personal romance, with less emphasis on the relationships between the Watchers. Overall, this is a compelling story, but some things are lost in its complexity.
