Rhiannon Castle is a D’anu Witch who believes she was abandoned by her parents as a child. This inaccuracy was perpetuated by her Aunt Aga. When Rhiannon was five, her aunt caught her playing with the Shadows which lived inside her and screamed at her that they were evil and she should be thrown out on the street even though she was only five. One of her Shadows reacted to Aunt Aga’s ire and began to throttle Aga. It was at that time that Rhiannon locked the Shadows deep inside in a box with no key. Aunt Aga kicked Rhiannon out when she was eighteen. Eventually Rhiannon met the people she now considers to be her family, her D’anu Coven sisters.
Keir Tuatha D’Danann brethren are the only true family Keir has ever known. His father lied to him about his mother abandoning him and made him sleep out in the barn. The D’anann and D’anu have teamed together along with the Paranormal Special Forces (PSF) officers to battle the evil goddess Ceithlenn that escaped from the Underworld. Ceithlenn is a soul stealer. The more souls she steals the greater her strength and power becomes. When she is strong enough plans are to bring her husband Balor from the underworld. So they can reign death and destruction on the world together. Meanwhile, Ceithlenn waits to get stronger, wreaking havoc and chaos by eating humans and taking their souls with the help of her demons and the Fomorri.
To battle and win against Ceithlenn, Keir and Rhiannon’s must work together. Since Ceithlenn is so powerful and gaining more strength, they realize that they can’t do it alone and return to the otherworld to get help. There, they not only get answers but discovers a bit about themselves along the way.
In Wicked Magic, Cheyenne McCray highlights the battle between good and evil but also the battle with self. Through terrific characterization, wonderful descriptions and fantastic storytelling the story of the battle against Ceithlenn as well as Keir and Rhiannon’s love story unfolds beautifully. The characters work well together and play off each other to make the pacing and story flow. One aspect that I enjoyed is seeing the characters were flawed and their strengths and weaknesses shown very well. Wicked Magic is an excellent book and will weave its own delightful spell on you. The story is sure to enchant and charm readers with each page turn. Do not let the fact that this is the third book in the magic series deter you from picking this book up. Each book is a “standalone” and if you haven’t read the other two stories, you will definitely want to go back and pick them up as well. Ms. McCray is a very talented writer and now has a place on my favorite’s shelf.
