Victoria died at the hands of her abusive husband, only to find herself resurrected in the body of an Ancient Egyptian woman, Mayati, who’d just died in childbirth. Mayati’s husband, Khaemhat realised the difference. Victoria is a pleasant change from Mayati, and he keeps her secret.
She’s spent much of her time in Ancient Egypt learning to behave as though she was born there, helping her husband manage their estate and improving their financial situation. It isn’t until she’s accused of murdering her friend’s husband that Victoria realises she hasn’t learned much about Mayati, the woman she’s now supposed to be. And finding out may be the only way to prove she isn’t a killer.
Victoria is a surprisingly likable heroine, thrown into a world she adjusts to with some ease. It surprised me how little her 20th Century upbringing clashed with Ancient Egyptian mores and values, but this book is a sequel, and I got the impression much of her adjusting to Ancient Egyptian life took place in the previous book.
Ms. Mueller has put together a great read that will leave readers satisfied with the way it all turns out. However, because it is part murder-mystery, part historical, and part erotic romance, there are times it can’t quite all come off. In this case, I found the world-building sometimes faltered, and the whodunit wasn’t really a surprise.
However, the relationship Victoria has built with Khaemhat is the real focus of this book. They have a friendship combined with dizzying physical attraction; they are a terrific match. In this, Ms. Mueller excelled. They are the kind of cute couple you like to see at parties, because they’re so obviously in love.
There is a lot going on in Egyptian Days. In fact, there’s so much story and character interaction that readers (this one included) will put the book down, sigh a little that it’s over, and be glad to have met Victoria and Khaemhat.
