I have always appreciated Amanda Quick’s ability to use words to challenge literary perceptions about the romance genre. In Second Sight, she stays true to her own conventions and produces a solidly appealing literary feast.
Venetia Milton, a photographer with the responsibility of providing for her entire family during the Victorian Age, throws caution to the wind for a night of passion with Gabriel Jones. Despite that, she purposely chose him for a solitary night of passion. She finds herself heartbroken to hear of his demise a few weeks later, and out of sentiment, uses his last name when she manufactures the identity of a widowed bride to further her business. Things get a bit sticky when he shows up very much alive and plays along with her ruse to get to the person responsible for causing him to fake his own death — who now stalks Venetia as well. Thrown into the mix, Venetia and Gabriel both have meddlesome families — and secret abilities.
As always, Ms. Quick tangles a web of suspense, mayhem, and romance—then very deftly untangles it with surprise twists and turns. Venetia is both strong and independent - yet does not stand out as anachronistic for the time period. Gabriel is teaming with masculinity - yet retains an old world sophisticated sensibility. Second Sight is another testament to Ms. Quick’s abilities to provide romance that stimulates the intellect as well as the heart.
