A Historical Romance

Mary Villiers, Duchess of Richmond, is close to her adopted father, King Charles I of England. However, she finds herself opposed to the king and in the middle of a desperate attempt to bring peace back to the kingdom when the Charles I declares war on Parliament, led in part by his irresistible nephew, Prince Rupert of Bohemia. Mary is also torn between the steadfast love of her husband, James Stuart, and her smoldering desire for Rupert, which becomes whispered scandals by the king's enemies. Even worse, Mary's secrets, should they come to light, could brand her for treason and lead to her execution.

A beautiful, bittersweet tale, The Winter Prince drew me in as the historical events intertwined seamlessly with the personal narratives of Mary and Rupert. The events of the war and its effect on the country came to life through vivid characters, witty dialogue, and lush, descriptive settings. The chemistry between Mary and Rupert sizzled on the page with a slow, steady progression, and I found myself completely immersed in the story. Ms. Sawyer's novel is lovely and evocative, and I highly recommend it.
