Contemporary Romance, e-book
Eve Kendrick survives the rath of a tornado, but her house doesn't. In shock, she wanders through the rubble in a daze, and eventually calls her insurance company. The adjuster they send to inspect the damage is impossibly handsome. In spite of his starched appearance and initial cool demeanor, Eve is attracted.
Jared Kayne tries to remain objective and professional, but Eve gets under his skin. He finds excuses to see her again, and soon realizes the feeling is mutual. But when her ex-boyfriend and nearby neighbor recognizes Jared as the Pirate King, Jared is faced with explaining why he's been hiding behind his business suit and claims adjuster persona.
The premise, while fresh, sets up a situation rife with implausibility. Worse yet, it appeared the author knew it, and set about defending her “hook” throughout the first section of the book. Several areas in this same section also contained unfortunate info dumps which slowed the pace considerably.
Where most books fade in the middle, and the plot falls apart, Ms. Snow's story actually got interesting again, as her heroine began tracking down clues and investigating Jared's past. I won't say what she's trying to track down. You'll have to buy the book to figure that out for yourselves. But I will say that I think Pirate King is a decent book that probably should have started in the middle.
