Jill Hawkins had spent two years secretly longing for her best male friend, JD Devine. Brought together by an errant email, they had become friends, sharing as much as any married couple but without the physical intimacy that Jill longed for.
JD Devine was trying to right a wrong and wasn't who he seemed to be. He'd been fighting for so long to avenge his wife's death and hadn't counted on falling for Jill in the meantime. Therefore, he kept her compartmentalized as his “friend” until she is inadvertently dragged into his subterfuge and attacked.
Roguish Hearts is a fast-paced, hot book full of all sorts of twists and turns. The heroine, Jill Hawkins, is feisty and beguiling, and thinks fast on her feet for the most part. There are several times where I feel she is a bit too forgiving and willing to compromise herself for JD, especially a time when she apologises over and over for teasing him about something, when frankly I thought he deserved a kick in the ass.
I started off liking JD Devine but quickly started to dislike him. While I realized he suffered a terrible loss and was avenging it, he blew hot and cold constantly and treated Jill with what could be interpreted as emotional abuse.
That being said, Ms. Soarde wrote in some great supporting characters. I loved Spencer, she was depicted so well as the evil corporate head. Then JD's mother, Hazel, was such a character that I would almost read this book for her alone. She was brilliant. I also liked Drake, and I almost wanted Jill to dump JD for him. I'd love to see a book about Drake.
Roguish Hearts is well-written, with great pacing and amazing characters. If you can forget about what a jerk JD is and concentrate on everything else then you will find a fascinating, fun and hot read.
