A Historical, Paranormal E-book

Chief Inspector Lord Laniston (Lance) Dellafield is investigating the disappearance of a young boy when he first meets Ms. Morgan McAfee. A Druid, and daughter of a witch, Morgan has been called in to assist on the case, if possible, using visions she can’t quite control.

Lance is a skeptic, and he doesn’t bother to hide the fact from Morgan when they first meet. Morgan isn’t sure what’s more frustrating, the fact of his disbelief, or the fact she’s drawn to him anyway. There can be no future between them—the titled police officer and the witch—yet she can’t help but notice what a truly fine man he is, in more ways than one.

The Druid’s Daughter is a historical, paranormal, romantic suspense story. It may be inexperience with the genre, but I found both characters a little stiff. Morgan was a little more endearing, so I found myself respecting Lance vicariously through her.

This story works hard to span all four genres, and I found Ms. Stewart had to almost compartmentalise the aspects of the story in order to pull it off. Four chapters to deal with the missing boy, then four of the romance and explanation of some of the paranormal elements, four of a murderous lunatic at large…it seemed like the pacing never quite hit stride.

Despite this, the book is an enjoyable, cozy read. Morgan is endearing, and her attraction to Lance makes him likeable, too. The bits of Druid lore revealed through the story are unique enough to be memorable and to put a new spin on the clairvoyant who is needed by the police. While the rest of the story doesn’t contain innovative twists and turns to keep a seasoned romantic-suspense reader enrapt, it is an immensely readable story and a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.
